I am so, so sorry for your loss of beautiful Harper. You have put so tenderly the terrible pain we feel at the loss of beloved fur family members.

I had a sweet Sadie who was like your Harper, my shadow, my skin, our anxiety and our comfort sort of mutual. While we knew she was sick, her symptoms resembled those of my dad, who’d passed the year before from heart disease, and both were traumatic. I can tell you I grieved long and hard for both, with no differentiation in the grief.

For many nights, I went out at the time I’d have taken her to pee before bed, to look into the stars and say good night to her.

Sending you love.

Thank you for sharing your grief and grief journey. It helps us release our own shame - I hope it's doing the same for you.

I have a practical question - my husband and I are similar to you with living a wandering life and not being in one house for more than a handful of years. I had always envisioned burying our pets' ashes in the yard of our forever home but I don't know if/when that will become reality, so we carry their tiny cedar boxes with us wherever we move. I wonder if you wouldn't mind sharing more about your decision to put Harper's ashes in the flower pot and your plans for it. Thank you (and my apologies if you wrote about this in your writings and I missed it).
