You’ve come to the right place if you’ve got a question or issue with your subscription to Sayable.

I’ll try to explain a bit about how Substack works, but the main two links you’ll want to pay attention to are below. The first is how to manage your own account and subscription to Sayable and the second is how you can contact me if you have questions that aren’t resolved here.

Manage your account – https://lorewilbert.com/account

Contact Sayable - sayabletheblog@gmail.com

Below there’s information about what Substack is, how it works, and how to troubleshoot any issues you might have (or where to go to find an answer to your issue).

What is Substack?

Think of Substack as a bookshelf. It holds all the books (the work) of various authors and you (the reader) can come directly to it to read the work you want to. When you subscribe to Sayable or any other publication hosted by Substack, they create an account for you under the email address you used to sign up.

How Substack Manages Subscriptions

You are in charge of your own subscription to Sayable. I (the author) have very little control. You can access information about your subscription to Sayable here. Here’s where you can update your credit card information if that’s changed, give a gift subscription to others, change your email address, troubleshoot if you’re having email delivery issues, and more.

If you aren’t receiving emails

Sometimes emails aren’t coming to your inbox. Usually there’s one of two reasons for this. The first is that emails have been disabled, and the second is that emails are being marked as spam or trash.

Check first to see if your emails are disabled:

The other possibility is that you might have marked a Substack email—not necessarily from Sayable—as spam. Substack respects its readers and so when one email from Substack, even if it’s from another author and publication, is marked as spam, they decide that maybe that means you don’t want other Substack emails. You may have to go through your email and search for Sayable to find a recent one that automatically went to spam, and mark it as not spam.

If neither of these fixes work, you can always try the olde turn it off and turn it back on again by unsubscribing and resubscribing and seeing if that works.

Is there a difference between paid and free subscribers?

Every post from Sayable is sent to every subscriber, paying or not.

If you are a free reader, there will be a paywall in the email somewhere, giving you the opportunity to upgrade in order to read the entirety.

Some readers don’t love that they get these emails where they can only read half or less, but please consider that this is my job and I don’t want to be hounding people for subscriptions or doing subscription drives. This is the least bothersome way I can remind readers that my work isn’t free to make and therefore isn’t free to consume.1

Paid subscriptions are a two-way street

Your hard earned cash supports the work I do here to make Sayable what it is. I spend about 25 hours a week here, writing, responding to readers, troubleshooting, planning and hosting book clubs, hosting Zoom calls, planning special series, gathering links for Link Love, giving sneak-peeks to paid readers of works in progress, and more. My main concentration and commitment here is to my paying readers and I want to give them the best value for their commitment to me.

I keep paid subscriptions low here on purpose and make it even lower for yearly subscriptions because I value two things: the work and time you put into coming here to read Sayable, and the longevity of relationship we can cultivate with you committing to a year of reading.

I almost always do two big gift runs a year where I knock even more off a yearly subscription cost. I also always give complementary subscriptions to anyone who asks, no questions asked.

Paid Subscribers

Updating your payment details

Nearly a third of paid Sayable subscriptions are canceled because of expired credit cards. I can’t renew your card, you will have to do that and it’s pretty easy.

Go to https://lorewilbert.com/account and scroll down to Payment Information, tap on Edit, and enter your current card number.

Please do not dispute charges from Sayable with your bank. When your yearly or monthly subscription renews, you might see a listing for lorewilbert, substack, Sayable, or LWILBERT or a series of numbers, and a charge in the amount of $7, $43, $120 (or a different lesser amount if you signed up during a sale I gave). Disputing charges with Sayable puts me in a bind on many levels, so if you have a concern, just email me at sayabletheblog@gmail.com and I’ll try to resolve your issue. I have never refused to refund someone and almost always offer a complementary subscription for those having issues.

Cancelling your subscription

If you no longer want to be a paid subscriber to Sayable, go to https://lorewilbert.com/account and you will find a link in there to cancel your subscription. You can also choose to pause your subscription for a few months if money is tight or you are short on time.

Thank you for being here and supporting the work I do here at Sayable. I’ve been writing online for 25 years, and Substack has been the best place for me thus far to put my work. I am grateful for every one of my readers and never want to take any of you for granted.
