I can’t believe this but tomorrow it will be a month since The Understory released into the world. Her entry has been a bit rocky and, if I’m honest, pretty sad and frustrating in a lot of ways. Seeing all of you read it and say, “Me too,” has honestly been the best part of the past four weeks.
After it taking two weeks to finally shut down the print on demand copies that were going out into the world, it was then listed as out of stock on multiple distributors, and I didn’t feel comfortable sending anyone to Amazon to purchase. I don’t want to belabor that point much more because today we have good news. We finally believe that only real copies are being shipped out from everyone at this point and it’s listed as in stock and not on backorder from some more major distributors.
There’s no way we can get back these first four weeks of The Understory’s life in the world, but I hope I wrote a book that has a home in the world that reaches far beyond these first four crucial weeks. I hope it’s a book that finds its home in you too, dear Sayable reader.
I had an incredible launch team and they did their beautiful best to write reviews, share about the book, and give it to friends and family, but I would love to ask each of you to help me redeem these early days as well.
If you haven’t purchased a copy of The Understory, would you get your copy from one of these retailers over the next week? Or buy an extra copy for a friend! Tap on one of these buttons to get it now 👇🏼
If you have purchased a copy, would you leave a review from the place where you purchased it? And if you have a GoodReads account, would you put a review there too? Reviews will really help in this redemption process! 👇🏼
If you’ve read the book and liked it, and you’re on social media or have a newsletter, I’d love for you to share about it! Here’s what a few people have shared recently:
“The Understory is a book not of deconstruction but of decomposition- it gives voice to grief over losses big and small that so many of us have experienced recently, even as it offers hope that life can press upward out of death. Even so, it does not say, ‘Here is the path forward’ so much as, ‘Hello, fellow traveler; you are not alone.’” —Amazon Reviewer, ★★★★★
“After only two chapters in, I was HOOKED, if I had time, I could have read it all in one sitting.” —Barnes and Noble Reviewer, ★★★★★
“The Understory is masterful, thoughtful - for me it was both cathartic and provocative.” —Beth, Reviewer at GoodReads, ★★★★★
And here’s some posts from reader’s social media:
And some quotes from fellow Substack newsletter writers:
“In her newest book: The Understory, Lore Wilbert says, “If we want to be a flourishing community and world, we must learn to be mutualists, giving and receiving as there is need, intent on building resilient and regenerative communities alongside those who are not like us, not even a little.” —
“I'm still letting many of Lore Wilbert’s words soak deep into my soul as I finish The Understory…I have underlined half of this book with such a resonating ‘me too.’” —
“The book is a safe place for people who feel complicated. She hasn’t shared answers to my problems, but something better, less formulaic, more like ferns, unfurling in their fractals, moving in and closer to something deeper.” —
“I’m only 3 chapters in to The Understory by Lore Wilbert after hearing her read/speak at Nooks in Lancaster this weekend and I’ve already said “Me, too!” so many times. Lore’s writing is new to me, but I think we would be fast friends.” —
Welp, there you have it friends. Soon we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programing here on Sayable, but I’m needing to do a bit more work on this end than I’d anticipated earlier this spring. I’m so grateful for every single one of you who has read, reviewed, shared, and loved The Understory. It truly means more to me than I can even express adequately.
Thank you, truly.
Love, Lore
Keep it going-- good, good words and much needed for these times.
It's next on my list! I need a safe place to heal and learn and grow, and your stroll through the forest seems like just the place for me.
