The Questions We Ask Ourselves
Becoming who we are (plus links to the questions we are asking in the Wilbert home)
Every year around this time, I will begin getting a series of messages from long-time readers of Sayable. They will say something like this: “Can you share the link to your New Year Questions?” and I always do. First, it’s probably important to say that they’re not my New Year Questions, they’re an amalgam of questions from other people I’ve cobbled together over the years. And next, it’s important to say that the questions I asked myself ten or twelve years ago might not be the same questions I need to ask myself today, but it’s easy to get stuck in the habit of asking the same questions because, well, ego.
I keep all these New Year Questions from over the years in one binder and it’s just so satisfying to see the tabs grow in number every year. I’ve been doing these questions since I was single, living in Texas with roommates and attending a large evangelical church. Life has changed a lot since then. I’ve moved cross-country five times, I’ve gone to more than double that number of churches, I got married, I don’t consider myself an evangelical any longer, I’ve written three books, paid off a considerable amount of debt, dealt with some besetting medical/health issues that I was putting off, I’ve gone to graduate school, and so much more.
