Edit: If you’re just joining, enough of you said you were interested that I planned it all out. We start June 1. Details and registration here.
I am thinking that instead of a summer Sayable book club that I might want to invite fellow writers/creators into a three month experience together:
From June 1-Sept 1, we delete FB, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Twitter, and the Substack app from our phones and log out from all of them (except Substack—details for why later) online.
Then I send out weekly reflection questions, prompts to keep in your back pocket to pull out when your hand is itching for your phone, monthly Zooms to talk about publishing/platform, community/connection, the spiritual formation/deformation of these tools, and more.
I see a lot of us want to be OFF these apps (or at least not so dependent on them for our work, as we’ve been told we need to be) but I think unless it happens in community, it just mostly results in many of us feeling more isolated. I think doing this together would be a really helpful exercise.
If I did this, would you be interested in joining?
Comment with a “Yes” or heart this post to indicate interest (not committing, not yet, but just indicating interest so I can gauge how many of you might be).
Yes - the angst I feel at the thought of this idea is probably the biggest signal that I really need to do something like this.
I'd be really curious to learn more about this -- especially the bit about building/sustaining a platform while off of these "tools." Very curious.
