Often before bed, Nate will pull up a daily show host’s clip from the night before. It is probably not a good benediction to the day, but it has become ours. A way to add a little levity to the seriousness of the current geo-political and cultural landscape. Last night, though, a video popped up from nowhere. A person I’ve never seen before, speaking about a subject I’ve never searched before on YouTube, but the title reeled me first, and then, within seconds, the sound of this person’s voice, the tenderness—something about it drew me in.
All through the twenty-eight minute video, I was overcome with the emotion of not just empathy, but love. I wanted to find this person now and sit with them, hold their hands in mine, stare at their face, listen to them with my whole body. I felt overcome with love for this beautiful human as they shared their vulnerable, tender, extremely self-aware journey from life as a young boy to transitioning as a woman in their early twenties though to their still ongoing detransition process as a man now in their fifties.
