I’ve said before that writers these days have two careers. First, they have the weeks and months and days and moments of corralling words into books they love and feel proud of, and then they put on their publicist/marketing hat and (if they’re like me) turn themselves inside out for months trying to be faithful to the publisher who took a chance on them. Oh yes, non-writer friends, it is not so much that we think our books are the best thing ever and you must buy them because they will change your life, but instead because ohmygoshwhatifimafraudandmypublisherfindsout? I’m not proud of that, but I didn’t make the rules.

I am endeavoring, though, to shift them around a little.
