I have always described The Understory as a walk in the woods. It is going from here to here to here, every rock and moss and fern and acorn and scroll of birchbark revealing something different about the ecosystems of our hearts and lives.
It is a pocket full of found objects, emptied from a child’s day at play. It is both a science experiment and a literary experiment. Its destination is always, always, always here, wherever here is.
The Understory was not written as though class were in session. There will be no bullet points, no homework, no quiz for later. This is not a book that promises to teach you anything. There are no next steps. It is not a Bible study or exegesis. It is not “Christian Living.” It does not tell you how to live at all. Or how to be a Christian. It doesn’t tell you how to vote or how to choose friends or how to grieve lost friendships. It doesn’t tell you how to find a church or leave one. It doesn’t set out to tell you anything at all.
Don’t read and review it with disappointment because it didn’t fit those churchy boxes, it was never meant to fit any boxes. It was always meant to be a series of field notes on grief, growth, death, decay, movement, time, and being HERE, wherever here is for you today.
However, I know sometimes having a companion with us as we walk through grief, death, growth, and discovery can be helpful. That’s why I’ve put together this downloadable companion for readers of The Understory. In it there’s space for reflection, marking down quotes you like, questions for discussion in book clubs or small groups, plus space for personal reflection, even little spots for doodling an image that came to mind as you read.
For the next five days, I’m giving away this companion for free to anyone who wants it.
I say in The Understory that “my work is not to make you look at my grief and think of me, but to show you a grief so common you can face your own,” and that’s what this little booklet will help you do.
Five more days, friends, until this little book is in your hands. If you haven’t already preordered, now is the time to do so. My personal goal is to sell through the first printing and that only happens if YOU share the word, so if you’ve already preordered, ask a friend to preorder today. It would mean so much to me if you would, truly, truly.
So much love to you all,
Lore
